چکیده

High-speed TCP/IP networks, capable of supporting several 10 Mb/s data streams, are in common use within the continental United States and are being introduced in Europe. Extending such networks to support the intercontinental research community will require the solving of several technical challenges, including those at the transport level and those in congestion control and buffering within packet/cell switches. An early trans-oceanic T3 network, the extension of the ANS T3 Network to Hawaii, is described, and the technical challenges are discussed in that context.

Trapeze/IP: TCP/IP at Near-Gigabit Speeds

This paper presents experiences with high-speed TCP/IP networking on a gigabit-per-second Myrinet network, using a Myrinet messaging system called Trapeze. We explore the effects of common optimizations above and below the TCP/IP protocol stack, including zero-copy sockets, large packets with scatter/gather I/O, checksum offloading, message pipelining, and interrupt suppression. Our experiments...

Protocol Performance Measurements in a Heterogeneous Network Environment

Reported are comparisons of TCP-, XTP1and UDP throughput measurements over an ATM inhouse network, the STM based part of the BERKOM2 B-ISDN and a CSMA/CD LAN. The influence of concurrent processes on the throughput performance was also observed. TCP over a 140 Mb/s ATM channel showed a maximum throughput of more than 20 Mb/s. The peak performance of a UDP client process was at 45 Mb/s for the A...

Improved WWW Multimedia Transmission Performance in HTTP/TCP over ATM Networks

Transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) is the de facto standard of the networking world. It dynamically adjusts routing of packets to accommodate failures in channels and allows construction of very large networks with little central management. But IP packets are based on the datagram model and are not really suited to real-time traffic. In order to overcome the drawbacks, a ...

Performance Optimizations for High-Speed TCP on BCL-4

This paper presents experiences with TCP/IP optimizations on BCL-4 – a high-performance low-level communication protocol used on a cluster of SMPs called DAWNING-4000. We presently implement the TCP/IP support on BCL-4 with a gigabit-per-second Myrinet network. This implementation (called BCL-4/IP) realizes most of optimizations for TCP/IP, including extended MTU, scatter/gather DMA, checksum o...

High-performance TCP/IP and UDP/IP Networking in DEC OSF/1 for Alpha AXP

1 Abstract The combination of the Alpha AXP workstations, the DEC FDDIcontroller /TURBOchannel network interface, the DEC OSF/1 AXP operating system, and a streamlined implementation of the TCP/IP and UDP/IP delivers to user applications almost the full FDDI bandwidth of 100 Mb/s. This combination eliminates the network I/O bottleneck for distributed systems. The TCP /IP implementation includes...
